The Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL), now often called the PGDL, is no longer a mandatory step for non-law graduates.
Arguments For
- Provides a structured foundation in the seven core legal subjects.
- Builds confidence before tackling the SQE.
- Some employers still prefer or require it.
- Offers networking opportunities.
Arguments Against
- Cost: £10,000-£15,000.
- Time: One year full-time.
- Not required: The SQE is open to all graduates.
- Self-study or SQE prep courses may be more efficient.
The Verdict
If you can afford it and want a thorough grounding, the GDL remains an excellent course. If cost is a concern, you can go directly to SQE preparation.
